With a weird pattern and very small—if any—scales, the 45-inch snake Gary Braswell ran over and killed Thursday wasn’t something this experienced taxidermist was expecting to see.

Braswell and his son, Tanner, were returning from ’coon hunting Thursday night, and when he ran over the snake and went to inspect it, he thought it was going to be a rattlesnake.

But it wasn’t.

“This snake ain’t from around here,” Braswell said. He ran over the snake while it was laying in the road on Highway 310 about 4 miles north of Smith’s Landing.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician John Adams said based on the pictures he received from Braswell, the snake was a ball python, which are a smaller species than the pythons that are creating hectic in South Florida and the Everglades.

Adams and Braswell suspect that snake was a pet that either got loose or was released.

Braswell, owner of True Life Creations Taxidermy and Processing, said he’s going to make a belt from its unique skin.
