More than 100 youth got primed for school on Monday with free haircuts and back-to-school supplies, all thanks to NFL star James Butler.

Oliver R. Davis, who is a spokesman for Butler, said the free haircuts and school supplies were gestures of gratitude from the former Super Bowl champion.

“He likes to give back to his community,” Davis said.

In a news release, Butler said through football he’s been blessed with many opportunities, and in return has developed a passion to provide opportunities for others in his community.

“This year, in spite of financial hardship of many families due to the harsh economic times, Mr. Butler has been inspired to sponsor a back to school initiative for the youth of Bainbridge,” the news release said.

He partnered with Sweet’s Barber and Beauty Shop, located on North Broad Street.

Three barbers with Sweet’s Barber and Beauty Shop trimmed and groomed young men’s hair as the shop was packed full of youngsters Monday morning waiting for the free haircut.

After the haircut, they were given backpacks and school supplies such as pencils, rulers and paper.

Butler was a four-year letterman in football and basketball and the Georgia state long jump champion for Bainbridge High School. He was a two-time all-conference free safety for Georgia Tech and two-time semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Currently, Butler is the starting strong safety of the St. Louis Rams. He previously was with the New York Giants for three years, and was the tackle leader for the team in their Super Bowl XLII win over the New England Patriots.
