Dr. William G. Watson, who led the Bainbridge High School Bearcats to two successful football seasons in 1937 and 1938, is still practicing medicine in Augusta at the age of 100.
He was featured on Monday night’s CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
During the feature, it was pointed out that Dr. Watson still drives to work at Augusta’s University Hospital, where he is a department chairman.
He estimated that he had delivered between 15,000 to 18,000 babies since delivering his first one in 1944.
The W.G. Watson Women’s Center at University Hospital is named for him.
As a football coach, he led the Bearcats to a 5-3-1 record in 1937 and a 7-2-1 record in 1938.
His two Bearcats teams played in the South Georgia Football Association.
His 1937 team posted three shutouts, blanking Carrabelle, Fla. High School 21-0, Americus High School 25-0 and Cottonwood (Ala.) High School 18-0.
They were also awarded a 1-0 victory when Blakely High School had to forfeit their game with them.
In their final three 1937 games, Dr. Watson’s Bearcats lost 14-0 to Moultrie High School, 26-0 to Thomasville High School and 13-0 to Albany High School.
In 1938, Dr. Watson’s Bearcats won their first four games of the season in convincing fashion.
They opened with an 18-0 victory over Camilla High School. After downing Chipley (Fla.) High School 12-7, they defeated Blounstown (Fla.) High School 27-6 and Cottonwood (Ala.) High School 50-6.
The Bearcats rounded out the 1938 season with a 0-0 tie with Thomasville, a 31-0 victory over Pelham, a 20-0 loss to Albany, a 25-0 victory over Cairo, a 46-0 victory over Ozark, Ala. and a 34-0 loss to Thomasville.
