A funeral service for Mr. Clifford E. Wells, 90, of Climax, will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Climax United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne McDonald and the Rev. Doug Halstead officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery with Pagett Wells, James Wells, Shawn Lanier, Todd Johnson, Chad Johnson, Dewey Donalson, John Donalson, Allen Donalson, Scott Ariail, James Eubanks and Donald Greener serving as active pallbearers.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home.
Born January 8, 1920 in Climax, Ga., Mr. Wells passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Wells was the son of John Henry Wells and Ida Dixon Wells. He was a graduate of Climax High School, Class of 1936, attended Georgia Southwestern College, and received his Bachelor of Science in History from Georgia Southern University in 1940. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He taught history at West Bainbridge High School and coached the football team and the boy’s basketball team. He later taught history at Climax High School and coached the girl’s basketball team. He was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office and retired with 38 years of service. He served on the Climax City Council, was the first president of Climax Community Club, and served on the Cedar Grove Cemetery Committee. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 4904 and American Legion Post 62.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pat Pagett Wells, and four brothers, Posey Dixon Wells, Carlton Wells, Ralph Wells, and Hubert Wells.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Fannie Ponder Wells of Climax; two sons, Larry Wells and his wife Marsha of Donalsonville, Ga., and Jimmy Johnson and his wife Debbie of Cairo, Ga.; three daughters, Kaye W. Weathers and her husband Harry of Waynesboro, Ga., Martha Donalson and her husband Herbert of Thomasville, Ga,, and Joyce Halstead and her husband Doug of Thomasville, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Ivey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
