The recognitions came during halftime of the Bainbridge Middle School eighth grade Bearcats 16-0 homecoming game loss to the Washington Middle School eighth grade Tigers of Cairo.
The halftime crownings and recognitions were done by Bainbridge Middle School principal Dr. Marvin Thomas and Taylor Austin, last year’s homecoming queen, who is a freshman at Bainbridge High School.
Washington’s Tigers led the game 8-0 at halftime. They were paced by running back Decourie Gaines, who scored both of their touchdowns and both of their two-point conversions.
Gaines caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeremiah Hill with just 6.3 seconds left in the second quarter.
With just 10.8 seconds remaining in the game, Gaines ran 16 yards for a touchdown to make it 16-0.
The Bearcats threatened early. Quarterback Trey Miller and wide receiver Victor Bodison connected on a 30-yard pass from the Bearcat’s own 35-yard-line to the Tigers 35-yard-line with 2:58 left in the first quarter. A fumble stopped the drive a few plays later.
The eighth grade Bearcats, who are 2-3 on the season, will have an open date next week and close out their season with a Thursday, Oct.14 road game against the Thomas County Central Middle School eighth grade Yellow Jackets.
Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. at Central’s Jackets Nest Stadium.
