Use common sense while traveling

Chances are that you, or someone that you know, is going to be traveling to visit family or friends this Christmas weekend. Experts with the National Safety Council and American Automobile Association recommend following several tips if you plan to hit the road for the holidays.
First, have an itinerary and leave early, so that you don’t feel too stressed. If it’s possible, take several short breaks every two to three hours, especially if you have young children. It’s amazing how much more refreshed you will feel just by getting out of the car and stretching.
It’s also important to “hope for the best and plan for the worst.” Be sure that you’ve got a spare tire and any other equipment that might be necessary for breakdowns, such as jumper cables. According to the AAA, it’s important to have a first aid kit, food and water, blankets, and a flashlight or flares.
Of course, it’s equally important to follow all posted signs and traffic directions, especially speed limits. Troopers and policemen will be out in force on highways during the holiday season, and nothing puts a damper on your Christmas spirit more than a speeding ticket.
