2010 Unofficial Election Results

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop beat the odds of other Democratic incumbents Tuesday by narrowly winning re-election.

According to unofficial results from the Georgia Secretary of State’s office with 99 percent of precincts reporting, Bishop received 86,370 votes, or 51.4 percent, to Mike Keown’s 81,594 votes, or 48.6 percent, in the 2nd Congressional race.

Keown, a state representative and a minister from Coolidge, Ga., reportedly conceded defeat Wednesday morning.

Bishop, an 18-year veteran of Congress from Columbus, pulled out large margins of votes from his home county of Muscogee as well as Dougherty County.

In Decatur County, Keown received 4,417 votes, or 60.66 percent, to Bishop’s 2,861 votes, or 39.29 percent.

Deal win governorship

Nathan Deal, a Republican and former congressman from Gainesville, Ga., beat former Gov. Roy Barnes Tuesday.

With 97 percent of precincts counted, the Secretary of State’s office reports Deal with 53 percent of votes to Barnes’ 43 percent. Libertarian candidate John H. Monds received 4 percent.

Decatur County’s vote count in the governor’s race closely reflected the state’s percentages. Deal received 3,755 votes, or 52.58 percent, to Barnes’ 3,265 votes, or 45.72 percent. Monds received 114 votes, or 1.60 percent.
