Funeral services for Deacon Harden “Bill” Allen Jr., 82, of Baker County, Ga., were held Nov. 16, 2010, at Springfield M.B. Church in Newton, Ga., with the Rev. Henry Hogan officiating.

Interment followed at the church cemetery with friends of the family acting as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were deacons of Springfield Church and grandsons.

Mr. Allen was born in Baker County, Ga., Nov. 26, 1927, and died Nov. 12, 2010, at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany.

He was a farmer and a school bus driver for Baker County Board of Education until his retirement in June 2006. He served on the Golden Triangle Resource Conservation and Development Council for 16 years and recently received an outstanding service and dedication award from the council.

He was a public servant from 1989-2010 as a county commissioner of the 12th district. He was a Mason and a devoted member of the Springfield Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday School, and a deacon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Mae Mitchell Allen, and two sons, Sylvester Marion Allen and Harold Allen

Survivors include Joann Brown of Camilla, Ga., Mary Mack of Lithonia, Ga., Minnie Allen, Bainbridge, Ga., Glen Allen, Albany, Ga., Shanta Martin of Snellville, Ga., Cedric Allen, of Duluth, Ga., and Tony D. Williams of Newnan, Ga.; three brothers Ceabron Allen of Colquitt, L.W. Allen of Bainbridge, Lamar Allen of Decatur, Ga.; five sisters, Eunice Haire, Palmetto, Fla., Carye Roberts, Newton, Ga., Maggie Close, Bainbridge, Mildred Allen Keaton, Albany, Annette Davenport of Douglasville, Ga.; 18 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Bruton Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
