Conyers receives GMA honor

Bainbridge Council Member Luther Conyers received the prestigious Certificate of Distinction from the Georgia Municipal Training Institute at the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Annual Mayors’ Day Conference in Atlanta on January 22.
The Georgia Municipal Training Institute, a cooperative effort of GMA and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, provides a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for elected city officials. To receive a Certificate of Distinction a city official must complete a minimum of 204 units of credit, including 12 required courses. The training program consists of a series of more than 40 six-unit courses.
Conyers is one of four city officials to receive this certificate at the 2012 Mayors’ Day Conference in Atlanta.
“This is an outstanding achievement,” said GMA Executive Director Lamar Norton. “We commend Council Member Conyers for this accomplishment and for the dedication he’s shown in using this valuable resource to become a more effective city official.”
In 2008, Conyers was inducted into the Georgia Municipal Government Hall of Fame, which “recognizes current and former city officials who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities and actively participated in the Association.”
Conyers, who was first elected to the Bainbridge City Council in 1977, has actively served on GMA committees which oversee employee retirement benefits and training courses for leaders of cities across Georgia.
Conyers is also active in the Rotary Club, American Legion Post No. 502, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce. He is also the council’s liaison to the city’s Planning Commission and teaches about planning and zoning issues during Bainbridge’s annual Student Government Days.
Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, research, training, employee benefit and technical consulting services to its 500 member cities.
