The Bainbridge High School Bearcats swept a pair of basketball games over the weekend, improving their record to 21-4. As of Monday, the Bearcats had won 15 straight games; their last loss was Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, in a 59-55 loss to Leon High School in a Tallahassee, Fla., holiday tournament.

On Friday, they traveled to Thomas County and defeated the Central High School Yellow Jackets 60-52 in a Region 1-AAAA game and on Saturday they defeated the Cairo High School Syrupmakers 49-44 at home in a non-region rivalry game.

Leading the way in Friday’s win over Central was Rodney Glenn with 16 points. Dontavious Marshall added 11 and Paul Chukes put in 10. Jay Burns scored 11 for the Yellow Jackets.

The Cairo game was close throughout. Leading by just four, 32-28, entering the fourth quarter, Rodney Glenn increased the advantage to seven at 35-28 when he hit a field goal and free throw just 25 seconds into the quarter.

The Syrupmakers got to within three, at 39-36, when Trenton Madison, who took game scoring honors with 21 points, hit a layup with 3:55 remaining in the game.

Rodney Glenn, who led the Bearcats with 18, countered with a three-point jumper from the left baseline at the 3:46 mark to increase the lead to 42-36.

With the Bearcats leading 45-41 and 1:41 left in the game, Trea Kelly hit two free throws to push the lead out to six at 47-41.

After Madison hit a three-point jumper to get the Syrupmakers to within three, at 47-44, Marshall hit two free throws to put the game away for Bainbridge.

“We were fortunate to win tonight,” Bainbridge head coach Rickey McCullough said following Saturday night’s victory over Cairo. “It’s always a rivalry game and both teams always play hard.”

The Bearcats returned to action Tuesday night, taking on the Lee County High School Trojans in a Region 1-AAAA game.

They will conclude their regular season with a 7:30 p.m. Friday home senior night game against the Randolph-Clay High School Red Devils.

The Region 1-AAAA Tournament will be Tuesday, Feb. 14, through Saturday, Feb. 18, at Northside-Columbus High School.
