A 5-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon, following a serious two-vehicle accident.
The accident happened at approximately 3:45 p.m., at the intersection of Hubert Dollar Drive and Old Quincy Road.

A Jeep Cherokee was headed north on Old Quincy Road and was attempting to turn left onto Hubert Dollar Drive when the accident happened, said Sgt. First Class Marc Godby of the Georgia State Patrol’s Colquitt post. The Cherokee was struck from behind by a Dodge Ram pickup truck, causing the Cherokee to spin out into a ditch next to a utility pole, Godby said.

Trooper Walt Landrum, with the Georgia State Patrol’s Colquitt post, said that the driver of the Cherokee was Emily Newsome of Bainbridge, who escaped from the vehicle and was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. Newsome’s nephew, 5-year-old Remington Walden, was trapped in the vehicle and died, according to Landrum. Walden is the son of Bryan and Lindsay Walden of Bainbridge.

The SUV was already engulfed in flame as Bainbridge Public Safety officers arrived. Sparks flew from the utility pole as firefighters sprayed water onto the burning vehicle. The heat of the fire caused the SUV’s tires to explode.

The driver of the pickup truck was 26-year-old Brian Harrell of Bainbridge, said his father, Lamar Harrell. The younger Harrell had some “bumps and bruises” but was not seriously injured, his father said.

Landrum is investigating the accident.
