The Decatur County Board of Commissioners will likely appoint an interim county administrator during Tuesday’s regular board meeting at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, former County Administrator Tom Patton resigned amid allegations that he failed to properly report a major sewage spill at the Decatur County wastewater treatment plant. Two days later, the board met in a public meeting to discuss a “transition plan,” ultimately deciding to begin a search for an interim county administrator.

After that interim administrator is in place, the county will immediately begin to search for a permanent administrator, Board Chairman Dr. C.T. Stafford said Friday. Stafford said there will likely be one finalist for the interim position announced at Tuesday’s meeting, and the board will then collectively vote on that person’s appointment.

“We are in the final stages of our search for the interim administrator,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of candidates that we are seriously considering.”

Stafford said that commissioners, as well as county administrative staff like County Finance Director Carl Rowland and Human Resources Director Marjorie Mayfield, were involved in the process of vetting candidates this past week.

Stafford said he could not give many details about the candidates, and declined to elaborate on if they are all from Decatur County or not.

“We believe that we have some very good candidates that have expressed interest,” he said. “This will be the completion of an interim step, and then we will begin the process of finding our next permanent administrator.”
