Four Bainbridge High School students, accompanied by Joseph Kelly, attended the 16th annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day held at Valdosta State University on April 14.
SK Day is a project that seeks to encourage high school women to pursue the study of mathematics and prepare for possible careers in mathematics-related fields. It is named in honor of Sonia Kovalevsky, a Russian mathematician and the first woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics.
“We wanted to give the girls a day devoted to mathematics and show them that math is more than just numbers—that math can be fun,” said Denise Reid, professor of mathematics at the university. “We want to educate them about some of the career choices available to them if they choose to study mathematics.”
