The City of Bainbridge was awarded an additional $3 million low-interest loan for its Lake Douglas sewer project.
The loan, approved by the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority executive committee, will provide phase two financing for constructing sewer extensions and pump stations, upgrading the aeration system at the city’s wastewater treatment plant and convert residential water meters to an automated meter reading system.
GEFA previously approved $8,302,836 for the first phase of the project, a news release from GEFA announced Tuesday.
The Douglas East project will make sewer service available for a fee to 237 homes that are currently using septic tanks. Work will start this summer on College Road and will include Lake Douglas Road, the eastern section of Twin Lakes Drive, Ashton Way, Legette Drive and numerous side streets.
It is expected to take 18 months to complete.
City Manager Chris Hobby said the loan announcement was somewhat expected, and that GEFA has told the city it would assist the city with the funding of the sewer project.
