Former Bainbridge High School Lady Cats forward Alexis Burke, who recently completed her second college basketball season with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, has transferred to Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., where she will play for coach C. Vivian Stringer’s Scarlet Knights.
Burke, the daughter of Grechelle Blocker and the late Charles Burke, played for coach Jolette Law at Illinois. Law, who was recently fired after five years as Illinois coach, played guard for Stringer at the University of Iowa and was a member of her coaching staff at Rutgers.
Burke played under former Lady Cats head coach Latreisha Moon at Bainbridge High School, where she was a team captain and first-team All-Region and All-State performer.
She also played for coach Kimberly Davis-Powell’s Essence Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, based in Tallahassee, Fla. She will have to sit out next season, then will have two years of eligibility remaining.
At her signing with Illinois prior to her senior Lady Cats season on Nov. 14, 2009, Moon called Burke an outstanding student and player who through a tremendous work ethic, helped lead her team to great achievements.
Law has called Burke a defensive driven basketball player with a great outside shot, who epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete.
