The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats softball team improved their Region 1-AAAA record to 6-4 and concluded their regular season with a 17-5 five-inning victory over the Westover High School Lady Patriots Tuesday at the Lady Cats Diamond.
A non-Region 1-AAAA game against the Miller County Pirates Thursday was cancelled.
The Lady Cats will begin play in the double elimination Region Tournament against the Cairo High School Syrupmaids Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Gordon Park in Albany.
A victory over the Syrupmaids would send the Lady Cats against the winner of Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. game between the Thomas County Central Lady Yellow Jackets and the Monroe Lady Tornadoes.
The Lady Cats took command of Tuesday’s regular season ending game against the Lady Patriots early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Taylor Swanner opened the inning with a single, moved up to second and third on wild pitches and came in with the first run on a passed ball.
First baseman Tori Sprenkle doubled in Bailey Rayfield, who singled and stole second with the second run.
The Lady Cats added eight more runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
To open the inning, a pitch hit winning pitcher Riley Fletcher. Shortstop Desirae Beachem followed with a walk and Swanner doubled in Fletcher with the third run. Right fielder Mabry-Grace Briggs then walked to load the bases and Bailey Rayfield followed with a double to left driving in Beachem and Swanner with the fourth and fifth runs of the inning to make it 7-0.
Catcher Morgan Cannon doubled driving in Rayfield with the Lady Cats eighth run. Center fielder Haley Thompson singled and pitcher Riley Fletcher singled, moved up to second and third on a wild pitch and came around to score the final two runs of the inning.
The Lady Cats final seven runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Big blows in the inning were two run doubles by third baseman Bailey Rayfield and catcher Morgan Cannon.
