Two killed in Wednesday crash on 84

Williams Cassels, 61, and Deborah Gaines, 55, have died after the Chevy HHR they were riding in collided with a Seminole Sanitation truck on Highway 84 Wednesday, Nov. 23.

According to Georgia State Patrol, Cassels was driving west on 84 when he struck the garbage truck, which was parked in the outside westbound lane picking up trash with its caution lights flashing.

Cassels was reportedly driving 60 mph, 5 mph under the posted speed limit of 65 mph, but he never applied the brake before the collision.

“He wasn’t paying attention to what was happening,” GSP trooped Walt Landrum said.

According to Landrum, Cassels was distracted by an electronic device at the time of the crash.

Cassels and Gaines both had to be extracted from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. Cassels was life flighted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries later that day. Gaines was taken via ambulance to Southeastern Medical Center in Dothan, where she died a day or two later.

No injuries were reported to the driver of the garbage truck.
