Tuesday and Wednesday GCA State tennis qualifiers traveled to Berry College to compete in the state tournament.
The first day of competition was the individual tournament. During the individual tournament, Caroline Wells dominated 6-0, 6-4 and won state for the girl’s singles division.
Coach Rhonda Wells said she was proud of Caroline and the season she has, and hopes to see the same showing in next year’s competition for her final year.
Jeb Smith and Chasen Wood won their individual tournament, 6-0-, 6-2 and was the state winner for boy’s doubles.
“I’m so proud of them,” Rhonda said. “What a way to end your senior tennis season. They should have won last year, but they finished the job and I have enjoyed every minute of coaching them.”
Olivia Penela and Sarah Beth Griffin placed runner up for girl’s doubles in the individual competition. They lost out to region rival, Citizen’s Christian, but Rhonda said the duo played great together and she will miss having Olivia on the team next year. However, she knows they will regroup and come back strong.
The team did not place in state on Wednesday, but Rhonda said she knows everyone was exhausted from individual play, and they will return next year with a vengeance determined to win it all.
