Following a round of excellent submissions from their first essay contest about the Willis Park cannon, the City of Bainbridge is hosting another essay contest for elementary school aged children in Decatur County.

The students can attend any public, private or home school in the area and are being asked to write a 250-word essay on Hernando de Soto.

The essay, which is inspired by a historical marker located at Chason Park, should answer two questions: Who was Hernando de Soto and what role did he play in Bainbridge’s local history.

Once finished answering those two questions in an essay format, students are asked to put their name, school and grade level on their essay and submit it to Crystal Hines at crystal@bainbridgecity.com or drop it in one of City Hall’s drop boxes.

The essays are due on May 8 at 5 p.m. and a guest judge will select the winner. The winner will also receive an Acer Chromebook 14 and their essay will be published in an upcoming Post-Searchlight edition.
