Barbara Greene Sawyer, age 97, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 15, at Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge, Georgia. A memorial service to honor Barbara will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio.
Barbara was born 7/20/1924, in Seminole County, Ga., the daughter of Ernest Joel and Eleanor Lane Greene of Iron City, Georgia, and was the second of six children and preceded in death by her parents; sisters Leonora Ingram, Helen Andress, and Anne Dorrell; and her brothers Alf Greene and James Greene. She was the wife of Robert Clayton Sawyer of Wichita Falls, Texas from 1945 until his death in 1968. Barbara is survived by her sister-in-law Barbara W. Greene of Brinson, Georgia, as well as many nieces and nephews, and many friends in San Antonio whom she considered “family”.
Barbara worked with her husband in their business until his death after which she engaged as a successful real estate agent for many years. Barbara had two passions in life, church missions and travel. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas from 1959 until her death where she filled many roles and promoted and participated in mission work through the decades.
Barbara traveled extensively and visited areas of Central and South America, Egypt, Israel, and other points in the Middle East. She visited most countries in Europe, including Cold War era Eastern European countries, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, several Mediterranean Isles, and many others. Her favorite travel locations were in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and England, where she had many extended visits and made life-long friends.
