Friday, January 27 was a historic day for the Bainbridge High School basketball team picked up a 55-47 win against Westover High School, giving head coach Kelvin Cochran his 200 career win as the Bearcats Head Coach. The Bearcats once again went undefeated over the weekend earning big-time region wins against Westover and Shaw. 

“The main focus last night was to get the win against Westover,” said Cochran. “I was focused on getting the boys coached up, and doing what we had to do to win. Getting that win and it being my 200th win was really like the icing on the cake.”

During their victory against Westover, the Bearcats first half was extremely dominant as they outscored the Patriots 32-16 over the first two quarters. Coach Cochran and the Bearcats have hung their hat on playing an aggressive brand of defense, and they did just that against Westover. Cochran still puts an emphasis every day on remaining focused and handling business whether it be at home or on the road. 

“Winning is always important but we still have to travel to Columbus and see a new officiating crew,” said Cochran. “We just need to stay focused and do what we do. I told the boys we were going to enjoy the next 2 hours and 45 minutes and then we’re going to get back at it and focus on winning the next game, and we did just that.”

In the Bearcats win against Shaw, coach Cochran still would have liked to see his team come out to a better start and show consistency throughout. Shaw had chances to take leads in the game but the Bearcats remained together and aggressive and earned win number 21 on the season. 

“I would like to see more consistency and them not playing flat,” said Cochran. “They came out a little flat today and played a little flat at times and I’d like to see that stop. Shaw even had a moment where they had the lead and I believe it’s because they were playing flat. I’d like to have just a game where I sit on the bench and laugh and enjoy them playing and winning together, but for some reason they like to keep it interesting. So I’d like for them to stay consistent and do what they do. They have their “thing” though, they work hard and work well together so it’s a great group to coach.”

As the Bearcats sit with a near perfect 21-1 record, they prepare to face Hardaway and Early County on the road before returning home on Feb. 10 for senior night against Cairo at 7:30p.m.
