The Bainbridge High School baseball team is continuing to show strides and progress as they picked up their eighth win of the season on Friday, March 24 as they defeated Port St. Joe 9-4 in a game that saw the Bearcat hitters stay disciplined at the plate and smart on the basepath. The Bearcats currently sit first in their Region as they remain undefeated (6-0) in Region play with an 8-8 record overall.
On Friday against Port St. Joe, Kagen Castro took the mound for the Bearcats to start the game as he threw a solid two innings, striking out two hitters. In the third inning, Brooks Hines came in to finish the job for the Bearcats as he pitched five innings, striking out five batters and picking up the win for the Bearcats. This win was Hines’ second on the season as he sits at 2-0 in games where he has pitched more than two innings.
What really set the Bearcats apart in their win was their baserunning. Combining speed with discipline is something the Bearcats and head coach Donnie Coxwell constantly emphasize and it showed in their win on Friday night. Collectively, the Bearcats had eight total stolen bases against Port St. Joe. Logan Rich led the Bearcats as he picked up three total stolen bases on the day, followed by Bo Smith and Koby Wynn who picked up two stolen bases each and Parker Landrum who picked up another stolen base. Their success on the basepath resulted in four runs, which the Bearcats very much needed on Friday night.
At the plate the Bearcats were efficient like they have been the entire month of March. Chris Cooper and Logan Rich led the team as they both drove in two RBI’s each and Bo Smith led the team in hits as he recorded two hits in four at-bats, while also driving in an RBI double. Drew Clayton also picked up an RBI double of his own as the Bearcats earned a hard-fought 9-4 victory, their eighth of the season.
As of March 28, the Bearcats currently sit first in their Region as they carry an undefeated 6-0 Region record into the second half of the season. One opponent the Bearcats really need to keep their eye on is Shaw. The Raiders currently sit just one game back of first place in their Region with a 5-1 Region record and have an impressive 15-6 record overall. The Bearcats will have their first test of the season this week as they will face Shaw in a three game series, with a double-header on Friday at home as first pitch is set for 4:00p.m. this Friday at Bainbridge High School.
