Charles Jerome Hunt, 92, of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, May 22, 2023.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Ford officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with Alex Burney, Chris Watson, Brad Lott, Philip Moore, Danny Moore, Stokes Moore, Griffin Perkins, and Jacob Moore serving as active pallbearers.

Charles Jerome Hunt was born February 4, 1931, in Brinson, Ga., the son of R.A. and Jewel Miller Hunt. He married Gracie Brock Hunt in 2003 and learned the blessings of family and spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). Though a deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Charles was first ordained in 1965 as a deacon with First Baptist Church St. Simons. 

In his own words, Charles told his story: I became a citizen of Lynn Station and a student at Pine Hill School, graduating in 1947 from the academy of reading, writing, and arithmetic with majors in plowing and the language practiced to move all stubborn things through the day and on occasion simply to maintain proficiency. I enlisted in the United States Air Force on September 6, 1950, and became a civilian again four years later. I did make it to Korea, served in a tactical control squadron but did not win the war. From Korea I went to the missile test range at Cocoa, FL, became group training non-commission officer for the 6550^th Missile Test Group (Staff Sergeant) and at last a Chaplain’s assistant after learning a new language.

After military duty, with my first wife’s help and the G.I. Bill, I attended Stetson University in Deland, FL, and graduated in 1958 with a degree in American Studies. From there I studied for one year in Ruschlikon (Zurich) Switzerland at an international Baptist seminary sponsored by the Southern Baptist Women’s Missionary Union. 

After Ruschlikon, I taught at West Bainbridge High School in 1959-1960. I joined Standard Oil of Kentucky working in retail and wholesale sales. Standard Oil of Kentucky was bought out and later became Chevron, I retired in 1985 and worked in a travel agency for ten years conducting tours in Washington D.C., New Orleans, New York, Europe, Hawaii, Australia-New Zealand, and various locations from Lilburn, Ga., and other sites around the state.

Charles read and studied everything. He openly shared his love of the Lord and quietly became the hands and feet of Jesus to those he met along the way. His story will continue to live as a legacy through his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Gracie Brock Hunt; his children, Sharon & Harry Rich, Jr. of Bainbridge and Sandra & Tommy Moore of Eldorendo; his sister, Betty Sue Smith of Bainbridge; his niece & nephews, Terrie & Troupe Burney and Alex Burney; his grandchildren, Victoria & Chris, Nicky & Brad, Philip & Amber, Danny & Laci, and Michael Earl; his great-grandchildren, McKynleigh, Stokes, Griffin, Bradleigh, Jacob, Anna Claire, Wyleigh Grace, and Quinn; and his special caretaker, Laretha Causey. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his son, Michael Brock.
