The Lady Cougar dance team looks to its seniors for leadership this season.
The team has two seniors and captains — Ella Grace Straughn and Lollie Gay. Head Coach Kellie Gay said they are very helpful in coaching a team otherwise made up entirely of underclassmen.
“They kind of take the younger ones on,” Gay said. “Ella Grace and Lollie are really good at changing things or making [dances] clean, that kind of thing.”
Assistant Coach Holly Horne takes on the duties of teaching the team dances and working with the girls on technique. Gay admitted she has no dance experience but said she handles more of the administrative responsibilities of running a team.
“If you help me, I’ll handle all the ‘stuff,’” Gay told Horne. “‘All you’ve got to do is just show up to practice and help me put them in the right rotations and stuff.” She was like, ‘I can handle that.’”
The team is learning a new dance to “Move Like That” by WLDHRT that they plan to perform this year.
“I’m just excited in general,” Gay said. “The girls all get along really well, and they enjoy dancing. I want them to be able to have a good time.”
