The Brooks County football team marched down the field at the end of the first half. With possession of the ball inside the Bearcat five-yard line, the Trojans were one open receiver away from a touchdown.
Senior Linebacker Javon Cox wasn’t going to let that happen. Cox intercepted a Trojan pass inside the end zone and ran the ball 101 yards to the other end of the field for a touchdown.
“I had to turn around and look,” Cox said. “I saw the running back was on the side, so I cut in, took the sideline, and took off.”
The 100-plus yard pick-six wasn’t Cox’s only scoring play of the night. The senior linebacker took another interception to the house in the second half.
“He’s a really good football player,” said Bearcats head coach Jeff Littleton. “He finally made some plays, kind of some things that we’ve been expecting from him all year. He’s an incredible athlete, and we try to find ways to use it.”
The two touchdowns from Cox helped the Bearcats beat Brooks County 42-0. Senior running back Keenan Phillips found the endzone three times, and senior quarterback Cam Sanders ran in the game’s final touchdown.
“They did some things defensively that counteracted what we were trying to do,” Littleton said. “We were able to adjust and attack in different areas. The biggest thing was we kept executing.”
The Bearcats’ defense was on point, shutting the Trojans out and forcing punts on most drives.
“We did a good job of getting to the football,” Littleton said. “We gave up a few big plays that we don’t need to be giving up, but we rallied to the football in the second half and tackled better.”
The win against Brooks County marks the end of the non-region schedule for the Bearcats. They finished 4-2 against their non-region opponents, with the highlight of the six-game stretch being a win against No. 1 Class AAAAA team Ware County.
The Bearcats head into a four-game region schedule to close out the regular season. First on the list of region opponents is Westover High School. They travel to Albany Thursday, Oct. 5, to take on the Patriots; kickoff is at 7 p.m.
