Sydnee Burke, a 2019 graduate of Bainbridge High School, has been awarded the Nathan Deal Scholarship to pursue her medical education at Mercer University School of Medicine. Nathan Deal Scholars are eligible based on their strong ties to rural Georgia and selected by their character, leadership qualities, community involvement and their likelihood of serving in rural, underserved Georgia. Sydnee’s academic path began with her graduation from Bainbridge High School in 2019, and her journey was further supported by the Bessie Willingham Tift Scholarship, which enabled her to attend Mercer University. During her time at Mercer, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, with minors in Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology. This multidisciplinary approach has equipped her with a well-rounded understanding of the healthcare field. Sydnee expressed her perspective on her education, stating, “I believe that a holistic approach to medicine, considering both physical and psychological aspects, is crucial in providing quality care.” Her goal of becoming a Primary Care Physician, with a focus on rural Georgia, has been a driving force behind her academic pursuits. The Nathan Deal Scholarship not only acknowledges her academic achievements but also supports her commitment to making a positive impact in underserved communities. The Nathan Deal Scholarship covers Sydnee’s tuition expenses, facilitating her journey at Mercer University School of Medicine, where she will join a community of aspiring healthcare professionals. Sydnee is the daughter of Brian and Gina Burke and the granddaughter of the late Jack and Jo Burke, the late Jack Ivey, and Helen Ivey.
