The Ladycat Tennis team handed Howard High School a 4-1 loss Monday to advance to the third round of the GHSA Tennis State Playoffs.
The win came courtesy of an undefeated doubles performance and two wins in singles. Ladycats head coach Xavier Bell said the dominance from his doubles teams today will be crucial to the team’s success deeper in the playoffs.
When the doubles get out there and they take care of business,” Bell said. “It’s a wonderful thing.”
The head coach explained that the team has great depth, and being able to “show it off” with his doubles teams gives his singles players a boost in confidence. If the team can rely on two wins from the doubles teams, they know they only need one win on the singles side.
“I believe we have unmatched skill from top to bottom,” Bell said. “If we can build off that depth early by winning doubles courts, it fuels everybody bottom up… How much better do [the singles players] feel knowing that they’re up 2-0.”
The victory pushes the Ladycats to the 3rd round (elite eight) of the GHSA Tennis State Playoffs where they face the winner of Lovett and Westminster. The match date is still TBD, but has to be played before Tuesday, April 30th.
