The Bearcat football team played its first bout of competition under new head coach Jay Walls, facing off against Brooks County in a spring game.
Bainbridge fell 21-0 to the Trojans, but Walls said he was pleased with what he saw on the defensive side of the ball. The Bearcats allowed two scores in the first half, both being breakout passing touchdowns.
“Defensively, I thought that we worked hard,” Walls said. “If you take away, in that first half, two big plays, we played some good defense.”
Walls was also happy with the offense’s ball security, citing the team’s zero-turnover first half. He said the offense has some catching up to do outside of that.
“We didn’t score any points, and that ain’t good,” Walls said. “We had one good drive in the first half, but I think we stalled out… This confirmed what we already knew, that we have a lot of work to do as a team.”
The Bearcats couldn’t find the endzone Friday night, while the Trojans scored twice in the first half and once in the second half. Bainbridge played multiple units during the game, from projected starters to 8th-grade/freshman development guys.
Walls said the game was beneficial to him and the team, highlighting areas that the team needs to focus on going forward. He cited blocking, tackling and “the little things” as major areas for improvement.
Walls and the team get the opportunity to address those things during the summer season. Walls also said the program will focus on “embracing change” as they transition into the Fall.
“We’ve got to embrace change,” Walls said. “I’ve got to embrace change. Every player, every coach… Last year’s gone, so there’s going to be change. We’ve got to embrace it, and we’ve got to get better.”
