Caleb Lewis, 21, from Bainbridge, was arrested on charges of attempted homicide and kidnapping, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. He faces serious charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend and her child’s grandparents when they tried to escape a domestic dispute at a Tallahassee apartment complex. Per the Tallahassee Police, Caleb Lewis and his girlfriend, Layshawn Wimberly, were living together at Emery Cove Apartments with Wimberly’s two children. On Saturday, Wimberly reached out to her mother, Bernice Scott, informing her she and Lewis had been having issues, and asked Scott and her partner, Charles Thomas, to come pick the kids up. Wimberly also feared that Lewis might have taken his handgun.
Scott and Thomas drove from Bainbridge to the apartment complex. Upon arrival, Scott attempted to take Wimberly and the kids with them, under the pretense of a hair appointment. As they attempted to leave, Lewis allegedly opened fire, shooting Wimberly, Scott, and Thomas multiple times. Witnesses reported that Wimberly fled across the parking lot in an attempt to escape. Lewis allegedly grabbed her, kidnapping her at gunpoint. He placed Wimberly and her two children into a vehicle and drove off.
Police were called to the scene at around 11:18 a.m., where paramedics were already attending to Scott and Thomas. They were transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment. While the grandparents were receiving care, Lewis dropped Wimberly off at the hospital and fled the scene, with the children still in the car. After safely dropping off the children, Caleb Lewis eventually turned himself in to the authorities. All three victims have sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Authorities are working to provide updates on their condition and the current status of the children.
