Loving These Cool Mornings

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

There may be a few, but I don’t know many people who aren’t loving these cool mornings. The forecast for Thursday morning is forty-two degrees! Remember, just a few weeks ago, it seemed that we started every day at a muggy ninety degrees?

I hope everyone is still praying for the recent hurricane victims particularly in North Carolina where there are freeze warnings and possible snow in the higher elevations. It’s those higher elevations which attracted so many people to move there and, now, it’s those same higher elevations that are making the recovery so difficult.

Many churches and other organizations are sending warm clothes as quickly as possible, but I’m sure the people in those affected areas are saying, “Hurry!”

As I write this, it’s Tuesday and there are only three weeks left before Election Day. Of course, early voting begins today so if you are one of those “just can’t wait to vote” people, go to your county courthouse and do it. As they say, “Vote early and often!” Just kidding.

I have always been interested in politics; I know I should get a life, but I haven’t missed many elections. Something in my DNA just says it’s my American right and civic duty. My first presidential election was in 1968 and I was in college at that time. Chances are I was more liberal than I am now, but we all make mistakes.

This year’s election seems to be a toss-up, meaning I have no idea who will win. I’ve made my choice, but there are many who are still on the fence. There is an uneasy feeling in the nation. For a while, polls have shown that a large percentage of Americans (70%) think we are going down the wrong road.

That doesn’t bode well for the Harris campaign, who, by the way, has gone on the record as saying, “I wouldn’t change a thing.” I’m sure the running Vice-President wishes she had answered that question about how she would differ from her boss, the President, in a better way, but she didn’t. She has made it clear, though, that she isn’t Joe Biden, nor is she Donald Trump.

How many remember the year and campaign of 1980? In the last few weeks of the presidential race that year, Ronald Reagan posed the question to the American electorate, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” That particular question has been a staple of presidential campaigns ever since.

Donald Trump has been sure to use that question. Mr. Trump is like a leopard that never changes its spots. As I mentioned many weeks ago, Franklin Graham has tried to change Mr. Trump’s leopard-like spots, meaning his language, but the former president “is who he is.” To use a David Allen Coe lyric, Trump is going to say what he says “even if it harelips the Pope!”

Our presidential elections, most often, come down to two choices. It’s the same this cycle. In one corner, there is the candidate who would say very little if the nation would only accept that. In other words, the fewer interviews and press conferences allow for fewer opportunities for a foot to be inserted into the mouth.

In the other corner, well, there is the candidate who if he could talk 24/7 would. And he almost does! He’s like the person who never lets a thought go unspoken. He’s just the opposite of the one who tries to stay out of trouble by not talking. I could say that his mouth gets him into more trouble than he’s worth, but as he would tell you, he’s worth quite a bit.

Meanwhile, enjoy these cool mornings.
