On June 1, Dominique Borden, RN and founder of “Touch of Life”, a program that offers young women workshops and certification courses in various medical fields, introduced the group “Identity” and held their first meeting to mentor young women at 509 Scott Street.
Borden founded “Identity” due to being a teenage mom and because, “it was something that I’ve always wanted to do when it comes to our young females. I’m trying to be a mentor and help guide them so they won’t make the same mistakes as I did.” The age group ranges from 10 to 21-years-old. Borden wants to encourage females to find themselves, and she does this by bringing in different people to help mentor and guide their pathway in life. Borden explained that college isn’t for everyone, it’s okay to find a trade. She also stated to choose a career that you will not regret.
The group meets once a month and during that day they partake in different activities. For example, in August, the group had an education class that focused on CPR and first aid which resulted in members receiving their certificate in the class. The group is also involved in local activities like Back-to-School drives. In addition, young women in Bainbridge aren’t the only ones who are allowed to attend the meetings. Anyone is welcome to join in the Southwest Georgia region. “With the outpouring from the community, I’m very grateful. I do see the group expanding in the near future and surrounding counties and areas. So, I’m excited, and I look forward to the expansion,” Borden exclaimed.
