Members of the Bainbridge Rotary Club gathered at the Decatur County Board of Education on Tuesday for their weekly meeting. Prior to the meeting, the club members packed lunch bags for students in need, ultimately packing 89 to be distributed among Decatur County schools.
The main speaker of the day was Superintendent Dr. Boyd English. English briefly retold his history in education, and how he eventually came to Decatur County. He went on to discuss recent events in the school system, including the new middle school, which is nearing completion, and is expected to be open and operational by January.
Dr. English also briefly spoke on the string of threats many public schools, including Decatur County schools, received following the Apalachee High School shooting, and the importance of a “safe and nurturing environment for everyone, not only students but our faculty and staff.”
He described this as one of the cornerstones of the Board’s philosophy. Another is, “To foster a culture and a climate that brings about innovation, and rigorous and meaningful instruction for our students.” In that regard, English spoke about the new STEM Center at Hutto, as well as the zSpace augmented reality learning tools being implemented in Decatur County schools.
English concluded by taking questions from the club members.
