Thursday evening, DCBOE held a board meeting to discuss the 2025 financial report, the action items, and recognize teachers for their accomplishment in obtaining certifications, and involvement in programs.
Keith Lyle of Brannen and Lyle Investment Company called the meeting to order at 6:00pm, and approved the motion to adopt the agenda and meeting minutes. Winston Rollins led the invocation.
The meeting started with special recognition of the School Appreciation Sponsor. Ana Baty, Director of Public Relations recognized First Port City Bank for their sponsor of “Biscuits for the Best” which is a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast at Bainbridge High School. She stated, “Biscuits for the Best” is a teacher appreciation initiative that was created by District Superintendent Dr. Boyd English. Baty stated, the event was a way to express appreciation for teachers and all the hard work they put in and out of the classroom. Directors from the Central Office visit schools once a month to serve breakfast, create opportunities to connect and thank the educators. Baty also wants to express gratitude for the event, First Port City Bank’s sponsorship and Decatur County educators. She exclaimed, “First Port City Bank is a wonderful example of how a community comes together to celebrate the incredible work of our faculty and staff.”
Next, Scott Morehouse recognized Victoria Harrell, Agriculture Teacher at BHS, for earning the title of Industry Certification. He stated, “she is an outstanding animal science teacher, and she’s also BHS and Decatur County teacher of the year. She’s also currently competing for the Georgia teacher of the year.” Morehouse stated the program proves that an individual has prepared students to be successful in the field which is the reason Morehouse is “proud to say Bainbridge High School animal science program under the direction of Victoria Harrell has achieved the title of industry certification.
Furthermore, Chip Davis, Federal Programs Director of the Decatur County School District, and Crycynthia Gardner, Coordinator of Family and Parent Engagement, awarded Shweta Patel the State Superintendent Parent Advisory Board. The State Superintendent of the Parent Advisory Board serves two years on superintendent Woods’ Parent Advisory Committee which means the Decatur County gets a voice with the state school superintendent about parent and family engagement. Davis stated, “this is Patel’s second time serving on the State Superintendent Parent Advisory Board, “so we are very proud of Mrs. Patel and all the things that she can do.”
Afterwards, Amy Zock and her team presented a video presentation of the WOZED Pathway Schools and District Presentation. WOZED Pathway is a course that supports pathways in engineering, drones, artificial intelligence, animation, coding, cybersecurity, data science, AR VR, robotics, and mobile maps. The STEM Pathway is named after Steve Wozniak, the innovator engineer and co-founder of Apple. Decatur County is the first WOZED district in the state of Georgia. The schools that are involved in the WOZED Pathway are Hutto Elementary School, Jones Wheat Elementary School, Bainbridge Primary School, Bainbridge Middle School, and Bainbridge High School. Zock is thrilled at the amount of schools who have established the WOZED Pathway. She stated, “This is our team in Decatur County that is working to bring these STEM Pathways to all of our students throughout the system. They’re all being enclosed to industry standards, construction, their learning, all kinds of things.”
