The Salvation Army was busy on Friday morning, distributing Thanksgiving food boxes. Each of the 110 boxes contained all the essentials for a Thanksgiving dinner, from a turkey breast to frozen pie shells, as well as a Bible. According to Salvation Army Director Merreann McDonald, the price of each box was roughly $80.

McDonald credited Christi Murray and Dana Bryant for their help in preparing the boxes. “This is the second year they’ve helped us collect the money to fund the boxes, and they actually go shop for the items, and build the boxes,” she said. Billy and Traci Poppell donated the Bibels that went with each box. Additionally, Walmart donated 100 reusable shopping bags to go in the boxes.

These boxes aren’t the only way the Salvation Army is providing for Thanksgiving; the organization will also offer a hot meal on Thanksgiving morning. Volunteers are welcome, though they are encouraged to contact McDonald in advance.

“We need volunteers to plate the food starting at 8:15 AM, we need delivery drivers starting at 8:45, we need people to work outside distribution starting at 10:00 AM, and we need a few people helping us with traffic and the parking lot setup starting at 8:00 AM,” she said.

For those looking to receive a meal, the pick-up time is from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, while deliveries to homebound people and those with no transportation will start at 9:00 AM.

McDonald thanked Bryant and Murray, “for their hand in helping provide this for people in our community, and helping be our hands and feet to accomplish this work.”

She also thanked Xanthia Sanders for her effort in organizing the project.

“We thank everybody in the community who has donated the money to provide the meals, or donated the money for us to purchase the turkeys. We could not do this without people being generous, and we appreciate that,” she said.
