Charles David Dukes was born January 30, 1947, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Charlie & Ollie Mae Daniels Dukes. After high school, David earned a certificate in welding but spent many years as a butcher. He married Linda Helms in 1981, and they made their home in Decatur County. David was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
David was a “Jack of all trades”. He cleaned the house, worked in the yards, welded, and could tell you about every cut of meat. Over the years, his customers at Herring’s IGA, Grocery Outlet, and Dixie Dandy became long-time friends trusting David with what was served for meals and special occasions in their homes. On his days off, David enjoyed camping and wetting a hook. He loved fishing especially when the “catching” was good.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Linda Helms Dukes; his children, James David Dukes (Connie) of Tallahassee, Nickie Charles Dukes (Marcia) of Thomasville, and Vickie Darlene Dukes-Tidd (James) of Perry, GA; his grandchildren, Logan, Kaylyn, and David; his siblings, Randy Dukes (Teresa), Lorrie Fite (David), and Phillip Dukes (Jenna); and his canine companions, Pete & Mollie. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Vesta Bush.
