This year marks new leadership for the Bainbridge High School wrestling team, with Jacob Floyd having been named the new head coach.
“While I’m new to the role, I’ve always had a deep respect for the sport and its impact on young athletes,” Floyd said. “Becoming the head coach this year feels like a tremendous opportunity to make a difference. Wrestling has a special place in my heart because it builds more than just athletes—it builds leaders. I’m excited to bring my vision and energy to this program, helping these young wrestlers reach their full potential.”
The Bearcats competed last month in the Colquitt County Scramble, facing off against regional challengers including Cairo, Colquitt, Valdosta, and Lowndes County. There were multiple standout performances from the Cats, including: Jayden Jones, 3-0; Brian Sanders, 3-0; Demarion Cooper, 2-1; Alex Deleon, 2-1; Ladarious Casteel, 2-1; D’ontae Smith, 2-1; Connor Kennedy, 2-1; Fernando Deleon, 2-1; George Smith, 2-1; and Ethan Castro, 2-1.
This year, the team has 30 members, fewer than last year. “It’s been great to see the interest in the program and the dedication of the athletes who chose to commit. While numbers are important, what excites me most is the quality of the team we’re building,” Floyd said. “Each wrestler brings a unique set of strengths to the mat, and they’ve already shown tremendous dedication during practices. It’s encouraging to see how hard they work to improve each day, and I believe this year’s group has the potential to make a strong impact.”
Floyd stated that the focus for this season will be on “growth and building a strong team dynamic,” and further complimented the team’s resilience. “Our practices, especially the conditioning have tested their limits, and they’ve risen to the challenge.”
“Wrestling is more than just a sport—it’s a way to prepare for life. It teaches discipline, resilience, and the value of hard work,” he concluded. “It’s about pushing yourself to be better every day, both on and off the mat. I’m proud of this team for their dedication and their willingness to grow. As we move through this season, I hope the Bainbridge community will continue to support and cheer us on. Together, we’re building something special, and I can’t wait to see what these athletes achieve.”
