Wright John Duncan was born October 29, 1952, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Roy & Evelyn Morris Duncan. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1971. Wright married the love of his life, Gwyn Cumbie, in 1972. He went on to proudly serve nine years in the United States Army as an infantryman, and later worked at the Marine Base in Albany as a specialist inspector. Wright was an active member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Wright was a “jack-of-all-trades” who seemed almost larger than life. He captivated young and old with his stories ranging from Bearcat games under the Friday night lights to his Army days and especially his 42 years as a farrier. The gridiron and infantry gave Wright just enough “umph” for breaking & training horses without blinking an eye. The projects from his shop, woodworking and leather, were evidence of his keen sense of detail.
He was always a kid at heart, and his mama probably said, “That kid” a million times. Wright never backed down from a challenge to race, and folks all around remember his GTO. Family, friends, a gathering around a pot of Brunswick stew, and a good cup of coffee set the stage for the storytelling.
Wright put others first and lead by example. His sense of humor made him approachable, and he always took time to listen and help others. He enjoyed working with youth at church, singing in the choir, and directing the choir. Children at Vacation Bible School could count on Wright to play ball, laugh a lot, and always be just a phone call away.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Gwyn Cumbie Duncan; his children, Neely Duncan Cooper (Michael) and Barbara Baker; his grandchildren, Madison & Logan; and his siblings, Ferrol Duncan, Sr., June Bouska, Morris Duncan (Mary Jo), and Patricia Bowers. In addition to his parents, Wright was preceded in death by his sisters, Rebecca Haire and Barbara Ann Zotyka.
