Last Tuesday, Hutto students participated in the annual Merry Market held in the lunchroom. The event was put on by the QUEST program, and teachers Melissa Benton, Porche Chavers, Amber Esquivel, Pam Oliver, and Brandi Deal.
The Merry Market is an annual event where students create different products like pillows, bookmarks, ornaments, keychains, and other items. Also, it provides “advanced learners experience,” Chavers stated. “They have been studying supply and demand, profit margin, cost of goods/services in the economics and math unit. They put their learning experience to good use in their storefront.”
Judges went around and scored the businesses from 1 to 4 based on: Product Originality, Advertising Slogan, Storefront Design, Product Variety, and Overall Presentation. Based on the scoring, students must create a compelling storefront, then explain to judges their product, and the cost of their products. Many parents were there to provide their children emotional support. After judges scored the students’ presentation, students and parents were given tickets to shop at the market. After the event was concluded, students calculated their profit by subtracting their total revenue from their total expenses to view what they made.
Students obtained firsthand experience of what it’s like to run a business. There were multiple winners from 3rd-5th. So, congratulations to all the winners from each grade level.
•Third grade winners: 1st place – Henry Confer, 2nd place – Adella Kirbo, 3rd place – River Zorn and Zoey Burke.
•Fourth grade winners: 1st place – Jaxen McCoy, 2nd place- Ada Johnson, 3rd place – Craig Green.
•Fifth grade winners: 1st place – Thomas Hufstetler, 2nd place – Charlie Griffin and Charlie Confer, 3rd place – Kaylee Kale.
The winners were awarded a certificate and a ribbon that showcased their entrepreneurial skills from their experience.
