Following a win over Echols County 67-62 and a loss to Georgia Christian this past Saturday 61-50, the Cougar boys followed up with a loss to a hot-shooting Sherwood Christian Academy (3-3, 0-0) 72-53. The Eagles scored seven points in the first 54 seconds and never trailed.
“We went in at halftime and had a heart-to-heart with them,” Coach Chris Williams said. “I said, guys, “in their place, we were only down eight going into halftime. They are not that much better than us. We have to continue to fight. And they did; they showcased that in the second half.”
GCA (3-6, 0-0) was led in scoring by #10 Keith Eidson and #12 Owen Earnest, who combined for 27 points. Eidson had seven rebounds, and Earnest had five assists.
“Owen Earnest is one of the quickest and fastest players,” Coach Williams said. “And it’s tough to stay in front of him. I tell him to attack the rim at all times, and I’m proud of his effort to ignite our offense.”
In wins over Echols and Baker County, where the Cougars scored 64 and 67 points, respectively, there’s been an apparent urgency in the ability to play uptempo in transition.
“When we get to move fast, running up and down the court in transition,” Coach Williams said. “This is a fast-paced team, and they get the idea of what I’m trying to do. Swing the ball, get better looks, and take advantage of our transition opportunities. I feel this team is stronger and faster.”
Setting a culture in year one is always a transition, but Coach Williams’s message to his players as region play nears is clear.
“We put that third and fourth quarter together into the full game. Nobody can beat us.”
The GCA Cougars will travel to Baker County on Wednesday and North Florida Christian on December 19th at 7 pm.
