It’s a day many kids’ dreams would come true: no homework, lectures, or teachers. It’s that time of year when kids rush outside with their coats, boots, gloves, and sleds – because a snow day is here.

Kids were sent home early on last Tuesday morning due to the pending winter storm. Once the winter storm arrived last Tuesday evening, it fell consistently and heavily, leaving behind piles of snow and frozen roads. Many schools in Decatur County were closed from last Wednesday to Friday. After-school activities were also canceled, giving kids plenty of time to rest, relax, and have fun in the snow. Decatur County hasn’t received a snowstorm for many years, so kids used this winter wonderland to make snow day memories by creating snowmen, riding on snow mountains, making snow angels, and having a snowball fight.

Even though the winter storm has halted the kids’ school routine, it has created moments of laughter and play for kids and families to enjoy. Bainbridge High School Principal Chris Bryant stated, “It’s an exciting experience, and it’s also been exciting for me to watch our kids play in the snow. The storm has not thrown us off track of our normal school operations. We consider the severe weather days, and I have the most confidence in our teachers that they will do a good job.” Grace Christian Academy (GCA) also participated in the snow festivities by creating a Facebook post for a snowman contest. Many people posted their artistic snowman creations with scarves, caps, gloves, or the GCA’s cougar shirt. Shawn Johnson, GCA’s Principal, said, “The post was fun for the family to do and stay involved. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for snow to come to Georgia. We are certainly still on track. I have enjoyed the snow, and so have my two little boys.”
