The Decatur County Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) have recently been updated. These maps assess areas in Decatur County at risk of flooding, and are used to set flood insurance rates and building requirements. The previous maps had not been updated since 2009. The surveys for updating the maps are carried out by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
“They use LiDAR technology now, to really scan and get much more accurate, better topography,” said Steve O’Neil, City Director of Community and Economic Development. “I’m involved with making sure all the information on the map, as far as like the road names, are correct. That’s our role in it, and to put the word out.”
O’Neil clarified that these updates to the maps are not finalized, and residents will have a three-month window during the summer to discuss potential variances.
Citizens can either obtain copies of the updated map at Bainbridge City Hall, or can view it online, at https://www.georgiadfirm.com/VOH/
