The Bearcat and Lady Cat Golf Teams clinched their first victories against the Cairo Syrupmakers in a thrilling match. Although the contest was close, the determination and skill of both teams shone through, leading to a triumphant start to the season.

Captain Dawson Cottles emerged as the Low Medalist in the boys’ division, showcasing his exceptional talent and leadership. Dawson’s performance was completely awe-inspiring, setting the tone for the Bearcats’ successful season ahead. On the girls’ side, captain Emma Dollar took the spotlight as the Low Medalist for the Lady Cats. Dollar’s steady hand and sharp focus were instrumental in securing the win for her team, proving her mettle as an indispensable leader.

The “Low Medalist” is the player who achieves the lowest score in a given round or tournament. This term is often used in high school and college golf competitions to recognize the individual with the best performance in that particular event. Essentially, it’s a title awarded to the golfer who shoots the fewest strokes.

“Being a low-medalist is taking ownership of the team, ” Greg Harrell, Bainbridge High School Varsity golf coach said. “A sense of pride, and being the leader of the team. They work hard to hone their skills. Both Dawson and Emma want perfection in their golf game and they work every day to get better.”

On Wednesday the Varsity Lady Cat Golf team traveled to Phenix City, Alabama to take part in the Lady Panther Invitational and compete against the best lady golfers in the south. Despite the weather, the Lady Cats were able to complete their first 18-hole match of the season. The low medalist was Dollar.

Harrell was astounded and proud by the level of competition strengthening for the female side of golf. The Lady Panther Invitational was a mix of all the best female high school golfers from around the three boarding states.

“I was amazed by how far the lady golf game has advanced over the years,” Harrell said. “There was representation from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Most are committed to various colleges, and it opened the eyes for the girls on what they can be with the right work ethic and that they too can get to that level.”

Harrell aims to spend as much time on the golf course as possible, but he also knows when to soak in the moment and realize the significance that these tournaments bring to his teams.

“It gave the chance for the girls to see a PGA course which was the biggest stage they had played on,” he said. “They’ve already addressed what they need to improve on in their games.”

A large portion of the BHS golf team’s success is owed to the tireless dedication of Mr. Rick Pierce and Mr. Richard Irvin, along with their committed staff, who have kept the golf course in immaculate condition. Their efforts have given the teams an exceptional venue for practice and competition, enabling the athletes to perform at their best.

The Lady Cats returned to the courses over the weekend, participating in the Packer Invitational at Sunset Country Club in a two-person scramble. Captain Dollar and Rylee Kate Brock led the way for the team. Also representing the Lady Cats were the pairs of Mary Margaret Beckham and Syndree Coker, as well as Ivey Godby and Elizabeth Adams.

Furthermore, the Bearcat and Lady Cat teams extend their heartfelt gratitude to all their sponsors. The unwavering support from these generous benefactors has afforded the teams numerous opportunities, from high-quality equipment to participation in various tournaments.

As the Bearcats and Lady Cats look ahead to the rest of the season, their spirits are high, their schedule is packed and their goals are clear. With the momentum from this initial victory and the continued support of their coaches, staff, and gold/silver sponsors, there’s no doubt that poise and improvement will be showcased.

To wrap up the month of February the BHS Golf teams would have participated in the Lady Packer two-person Scramble in Moultrie, Georgia. The Dynamite Goodloe golf tournament in Valdosta, Georgia, and the Seminole County Tournament taking place today at the Donalsonville Country Club.
