Thirteen members of the Bainbridge High School Anchor Club attended the Georgia District Convention February 28-March 2 at Epworth by the Sea in St. Simons. The weekend focused on autism awareness and attendees heard speakers on autism as well as prepared sensory bags for the autistic students in Glynn County. Attendees also attended workshops on resume writing and interviewing and on becoming strong leaders. They were also able to work on painting hospital art and inspirational rocks to take back to their hometowns.
After a morning business session and the afternoon workshops, the Anchors convened for an awards and installation ceremony. At this ceremony, the two BHS outgoing district officers, Gurpreet Kaur- District Secretary and Laney Brantly- Southwest Georgia Representative were recognized for their year of service and for the role they played in organizing this year’s convention. Then the new officers were installed, and Bainbridge High School is honored to have three Anchors who will serve on the district board (more than any other school). Jayda Sanders will serve as SW Region Chair, Cameron Whigham will serve as District Secretary, and Mitchell Carter will serve as Convention Chair. Carter remarked, “I am honored to assume the position as Anchor Club Convention Chair and am extremely excited to contribute to the success of the 2026 Anchor Convention. I look forward to serving among my fellow officers to make a memorable experience.“
After the installation of officers, awards were presented. Bainbridge High School was awarded the coveted Anchor Club of the Year Award, the Community Service Award, the Most Spirited Anchor Club Award, and recognition for their scrapbook. Kaylee Grace Buchanan received an Anchor District Scholarship in addition to contributing to the other honors. Anchor President Gurpreet Kaur said, “Convention was a blast! All the work we put into planning it made it into the great weekend it was. I am so proud that BHS won Club of the Year and the Community Service Award.” Sponsors Dr. Heidi Chambers and Ms. Sally Hawthorne are so proud of the club and its members. Chambers remarks, “We know we do a lot within the school and the community, but putting it on an application really brought how much we do to light and being recognized for our hard work made it even more special. The Anchors get enjoyment from their altruism, but I am so thankful that they get to hear what a difference they make. Kudos to each member!” The club will be recognized this summer at the Pilot International Convention, and Chambers hopes she and some members will be able to attend.
