From Tuesday to Thursday, the Bainbridge Middle School (BMS) Concert Band, along with the Bainbridge High School (BHS) Concert and Symphonic Bands, participated in the Georgia Bandmasters Association Concert Band Festival held at the BHS Performance Arts Center.

This three-day festival welcomed schools from across the tri-state area to perform three musical pieces in front of a distinguished panel of judges. Anthony Vittore, Richard Davenport, and Alan Carter served as the judges for the event. In addition to competing against other schools, the participating bands received ratings and detailed feedback on their performances. A total of 28 bands attended the festival.

Since January, Decatur County band students have dedicated themselves to daily practice during class to prepare for the event. However, their success would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of their band directors. These directors not only selected and taught the music but also ensured everything was in place for the students to excel.

Will Parker, the Band Director at BMS, led students in performing “Liberty March” by John Edmondson, “Kamehameha” by William Owens, and “Dance Celebration” by Robert W. Smith. James Sewell, the Band Director of the BHS Symphonic Band, guided his students through “Defending Circle” by Karl King, “They Led My Lord Away” by Gordon Allen, and “Jubilateo: Fanfare and Allegro” by Samuel Hazo. Lastly, Andrew Nelson, the BHS Band Director, instructed his students to perform “Queen City March” by W.R. Boom, “Benediction” by John Stevens, and “Rocketship!” by Kevin Day.

Performing in front of an audience while being judged can be an intense and nerve-wracking experience for students. Parker shared his thoughts, saying, “Motivation and inspiration begin on day one of school. Students feed off the energy and determination of the director. Our students have embraced the process of striving for excellence in everything we do.” He further emphasized that “teamwork and unity are the keys to a successful band. It takes everyone playing their part to perform well.”

For the 40th consecutive year, the Decatur County Bands earned Superior Ratings at the festival. Reflecting on the event, Parker remarked, “It was a learning experience for both directors and students. It’s a great opportunity for us to identify what we are doing well and the areas where we can continue to grow.”
