Last Tuesday, Rotary members gathered for their weekly luncheon at the Kirbo Center. Rotary President Tommie Howell opened the event, addressing attendees and providing updates on Rotary activities. With spring on the horizon, Rotary is actively collecting donations for its scholarship fundraiser. Two upcoming fundraising events are planned: a Dairy Queen night on March 18 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and a fundraiser night at Uncle Bill’s Pizzeria on April 1.
Following these updates, Howell introduced guest speaker Sean Johnson, Principal of Grace Christian Academy (GCA). Johnson delivered an engaging presentation on the history and mission of GCA.
Founded 30 years ago with 47 students in a single hall, GCA has since expanded to serve 375 students across two campuses. The east campus, established in January 2022 on the grounds of Calvary Baptist Church, accommodates 105 students in grades K3, K4, and Kindergarten. This campus features a library, multipurpose spaces, art rooms, and a team of 12 staff members.
Johnson highlighted GCA’s commitment to academic excellence, describing their “college preparatory curriculum” which incorporates instructional materials from ABEKA, Bob Jones Press, and Summit Ministries. While emphasizing the value of technology as a teaching aid, he affirmed, “Technology is a meaningful tool, but it’s not a replacement for quality teachers.” The academy offers a wide range of electives, including Spanish, Life Skills, Financial Literacy, Music Theory, Business, and Creative Writing. GCA’s accreditation comes from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Cognia. Many GCA high school students also pursue dual enrollment at ABAC or SRTC.
Athletics play a vital role in developing teamwork and life skills at GCA. The school offers 12 sports at the middle school and varsity levels, including Football, Basketball, Golf, Cross Country, Baseball, Track, Cheerleading, Soccer, Fishing, Volleyball, Tennis, and Dance. Additionally, Junior Pro Basketball and Baseball programs are available for students in grades 4 through 6.
True to its name, Grace Christian Academy integrates a biblical worldview into its curriculum. Johnson explained, “We prepare students to view the world through the lens of scripture, with Daily Bible Classes covering the Old and New Testaments, Cultural Issues, and Apologetics. Weekly Chapel Services feature student-led worship and guest speakers from local churches.”
Johnson also shared exciting developments as part of a joint campaign between Grace Church and GCA. The campaign has already raised over $3.7 million, funding the construction of six classrooms, two bathrooms, and a cafeteria. Additionally, a $400,000 grant was awarded to support the school’s expansion project, which has been underway since March 5.
The presentation concluded with a heartfelt video showcasing testimonials from students and faculty, reflecting on their experiences at GCA.
