The Bainbridge High School Drama Club recently dazzled audiences with its musical theatre production of Into The Woods, Stephen Sondheim’s iconic fairy tale mash-up that intertwines classic stories with deep, thought-provoking themes during the weekend of March 13th-15th, 2025. Directed by Leigh Powell, with Music Direction by Connor Griffith and Technical Direction by JoAnn Moore, this rendition of the beloved show was a testament to the talent and dedication of the students, offering a fresh and energetic take on the timeless classic.
A Journey Through the Woods
Into The Woods is a complex musical that blends well-known fairy tale characters—such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), and Rapunzel—into a single, intertwining story. The first act focuses on the characters’ quests to fulfill their wishes, while the second act delves into the consequences of their actions and explores deeper, often darker themes. As the characters venture “into the woods,” the Drama Club captures the enchanting atmosphere of the fairy tale world while offering moments of levity, drama, and pathos.
Stellar Performances
The Bainbridge High School Drama Club cast performed stellar, showcasing their vocal abilities, acting prowess, and impressive choreography. 11th-grade student Cameron Whigham, who played the Baker, brought a heartfelt sincerity to the role, displaying a perfect balance of humor and vulnerability. His performance in “No One Is Alone” with Senior Jerilyn Effland, who portrayed Cinderella, was a highlight of the show—emotional and beautifully executed.
Other standout performances included Natalie Moore as the Witch, whose powerful vocals and commanding stage presence captivated the audience from the moment she appeared on stage. Her rendition of “Last Midnight” was particularly powerful, a scene that left the audience in awe.
The portrayal of Little Red Riding Hood by Gurpreet Kaur was both endearing and fierce, bringing a unique twist to a familiar character. Jack, played by Mitchell Carter, was charmingly mischievous, making his journey up the beanstalk and subsequent adventures both entertaining and heartfelt. Another highlight was the song “Agony,” which featured the Princes, John Stout, and JT Powell, in a hilarious yet poignant number, which was particularly memorable. The ensemble also played a critical role in the production’s success, adding to the show’s energy and ensuring that every scene was alive with movement and harmony.
Set, Costumes, and Direction
The creative team behind the production transformed the stage into a whimsical yet eerie woodland through brilliant set design and attention to detail. The atmospheric lighting made the woods feel both magical and foreboding. Costumes were equally impressive, with each character sporting designs that captured the essence of their fairy-tale counterparts yet with a distinct flair that added individuality to the production.
Mrs. Moore’s technical direction brought the story to life, guiding the cast through both the whimsical first act and the darker, more introspective second act. The pacing was spot-on, and the transitions between the lighthearted moments and the more serious scenes were seamless.

At its core, Into the Woods is a show about the intersection of dreams and desires and the often-unexpected consequences of getting what we wish for. The Bainbridge High School Drama Club’s production masterfully tackled these themes, offering valuable lessons for audiences of all ages.
