The James Robinson Taekwondo team loftily represented their community at the Spring Nationals tournament in New Orleans, Louisiana, held on March 21-22. Competing against athletes from across the United States, the team showcased their dedication, discipline, and unique approach to training.

Mr. Robinson is delighted to share that every student returned with at least one medal.

The tournament, hosted by IMASS—a nationwide Taekwondo organization—drew approximately 600 competitors from over 50 schools, ranging from California to New Jersey and West Palm Beach. Over three days of intense competition, participants tested their skills in a variety of events, providing a platform for martial artists to refine their craft and celebrate the sport’s diversity.

IMASS stands for Innovative Martial Arts Systems, a company that organizes martial arts events and competitions across the United States. The martial arts system focuses on providing member-only events, certification opportunities, and continuing education for martial arts schools.

IMASS hosts national and regional tournaments, such as the Spring Nationals, which offer martial artists a chance to compete, learn, and connect with others in the community. The organization emphasizes combining tradition and innovation, promoting self-defense, and excellence in martial arts.

Taekwondo features a variety of choreographed movements that highlight self-control and self-defense while fostering harmony between the mind and body to elevate the spirit. Its techniques primarily include punching, blocking, and dynamic, acrobatic leg kicks.

For James Robinson’s team, being well-prepared was vital. They trained rigorously for two months leading up to the tournament, incorporating four days of 40-minute sessions and additional hour-long practices three times a week. Emphasizing self-control and precision, the training balanced intensity with mindfulness. “We focus on having good control—not kicking too hard but being able to defend yourself effectively,” Instructor Robinson explained. This commitment to balanced training ensured the team was not only physically prepared but also mentally resilient.

The team’s classes, held locally in Bainbridge, offer a customized approach depending on individual goals. Whether students seek discipline, exercise, or self-defense, the program adapts to meet people’s needs. Recently, the school introduced an adult class centered around exercise and self-defense, reflecting the inclusive and adaptive nature of their training philosophy.

A unique highlight of the James Robinson curriculum is their incorporation of Filipino martial arts, which includes padded weapon sparring. Combining elements of Taekwondo, stick fighting, and Muay Thai boxing, this event emphasizes controlled contact. Participants compete with protective gear, earning points based on accuracy and target areas. “It’s light contact, but it challenges precision and strategy,” Robinson said.

The Spring Nationals tournament provided an invaluable opportunity for the team to showcase their skills and learn from competitors nationwide. Their participation underscored the community’s growing enthusiasm for martial arts and the team’s dedication to excellence. As they continue to expand their reach and innovate their training, the James Robinson Taekwondo team remains a beacon of discipline and an unwavering commitment in Bainbridge.
