On Monday evening, the Firehouse Arts Center welcomed 1st through 4th-grade students for an engaging session of Arts Through the Decades, a six-week art history program exploring impressionism, art nouveau, and pop art.

During the session, students delved into impressionist art, a style rooted in painting outdoors and capturing scenes spontaneously, without a predetermined image. Mary Alice Long, Gallery Assistant and Art Educator, explained, We are teaching them that impressionist artists painted from unique perspectives. They can paint a railing, a tree, or a fire hydrant. They must focus on a particular object or item they find unique rather than the entire image.”

Each young artist had the opportunity to paint on canvases using small easels, immersing themselves in the expressive use of color, a defining characteristic of impressionism. Through hands-on experience, students learned how to embrace creativity and observe the world around them from fresh perspectives.
