Mercer Max Griffin, 80, of Bainbridge, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen Webb officiating. Interment will follow at Oak City Cemetery with Max’s great-nephews serving as active pallbearers.

Mercer Max Griffin was born October 30, 1944, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Glenn & Anna Grace Baggs Griffin. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and earned a master’s degree in education from Georgia Southern University. Max retired from Decatur County Schools having taught thirty years at Hutto Jr. High School. Post-retirement, he served on the Book Mobile and also taught Adult Education classes. Max was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Independence was a strong genetic quality for Max. He penned the list on “do it your way” characteristics. He was a voracious reader and an accomplished pianist and organist. Max traveled to all fifty states and procured a unique collection of items from his travels. His perspective on the places he visited was as unique as the experience.
Max loved animals and had many pets over the years. Family was always a source of joy and laughter for Max. His favorite memories often included eateries, fellowshipping with friends who were like family, and the annual Griffin Family Fourth of July gatherings at Mexico Beach.
Survivors include his sister, Cile Meagher of Murfreesboro, TN; his nieces & nephews, Martha Reynolds, Bill & Janie Reynolds, Edward & Tonya Reynolds, Anna & Andy Payne, Cindy & Lenny Glynn, Glenn & Dana Griffin, Cile & Woodie Warr, Melissa & Phil Dodd, Jennifer & Kenny Gerhart, Colleen & Roger Smith, Patrick & Keri Meagher, and Caroline & Butch Jones; and several great-nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his siblings, Glenn Griffin and Sug Reynolds.
