Bainbridge Public Safety conducted a major drug suspect roundup, dubbed “Operation Clean-Sweep,” on Monday morning.

The operation, which targeted more than 50 people suspected of selling illegal drugs, was the cumulation of a six-month drug investigation into street-level and open-air drug sales in Bainbridge, according to a BPS news release.

The round-up kicked off at about 5:30 a.m. Monday, with officers split up into five teams. Each team was given a list of suspects to locate, as well as their addresses. By 6:10 a.m., six suspects sat in a temporary holding cell at BPS Headquarters, where they were booked before being sent to the Decatur County Jail. By 8:20 a.m., about 15 suspects were in custody.

By Tuesday afternoon, 32 suspects had either been arrested or turned themselves in.

Each of the suspects were thoroughly searched — officers took an inventory of their personal property and placed it into evidence bags. A cell phone and a marijuana cigarette was taken off one suspect, BPS Chief Investigator Frank Green said.

The investigation, conducted between November 2011 and April 2012, focused on areas where citizens have made the most complaints of nuisance drug sales, Green said.

BPS officers, and officers from other agencies, arrested numerous offenders and seized some of the offenders’ property, including at least eight cars, a motorcycle, televisions, furniture, a lawnmower, a grill, exercise equipment and a refrigerator. BPS will petition to confiscate any of the vehicles and property that were used in drug sales or was purchased using proceeds from drug sales, Green said.

Other agencies taking part in Operation Clean-Sweep were the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Department of Parole and the Georgia Department of Corrections. Approximately 40 officers participated in the suspect round-up and property seizure.

Leading the five teams of officers in Monday’s round-up were BPS Investigator Chris Jordan, who organized the overall drug sales investigation, as well as BPS investigators Mark Esquivel, Ryan Deen, Anthony Stubbs and Chief Investigator Green.
